No “triscadecaphobia” for us! Why would we fear either the number 13 or…Trinidaddio Blues Fest #13? Sounds lucky to me and…hopefully to you as well. Certainly with the lineup of talent coming to Trinidaddio, including many a “first timer”…August 27th stands out on the calendar as a date that deserves a gold star!
We take great pride in bringing you the very best in the blues every year…this year is certainly no exception!
CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE IS COMING TO TRINIDADDIO!
“Superb, original and compelling…harmonica master Musselwhite sets the standard for blues.” –ROLLING STONE
You heard right…one of the world’s greatest harmonica players, the newly (again!) crowned “Best Instrumentalist – Harmonica” and “Traditional Male Blues Artist Of The Year” winner at this year’s “Blues Music Awards” in Memphis (the Grammy’s of the blues as they are known) is coming to town. This year, Charlie’s latest record didn’t settle for just the “Grammy’s of the Blues”…but…Charlie and his new disc are full on Grammy nominated too!
From Charlie’s website: www.charliemusselwhite.com: Harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite’s life reads like a classic blues song: born in Mississippi, raised in Memphis and schooled on the South Side of Chicago. A groundbreaking recording artist since the 1960s, Musselwhite continues to create trailblazing music while remaining firmly rooted in the blues. His worldly-wise vocals, rich, melodic harmonica playing and deep country blues guitar work flawlessly accompany his often autobiographical and always memorable original songs. Living Blues says, “Musselwhite’s rock-solid vocals creep up and overwhelm you before you know it. He plays magnificent harp with superb dexterity and phrasing. The results are amazing.”
Of all the exciting headliners we have had…Charlie may excite me the most. I saw him first on Chicago’s West Side at “Rosa’s Blues Lounge” many years ago after being an avid listener for years. Just recently I had another “Charlie Treat” in Utica, NY where he was playing with Hot Tuna and I got a chance to meet him after the show. A truly nice man, an amazing player and while “legendary” is an over-used term to describe musicians…it just happens to fit this one! Come enjoy the best. Come hear Charlie Musselwhite. (This year…one of our promises is to have our headliner on the stage early so that EVERYONE can enjoy our top acts!!).
As always…the headliner is great but…what about the top bands that lead up to that time? WOW is the word that comes to mind this year! A few years ago…the Trinidaddio faithful got to experience the Fest’s first taste of Zydeco…now…after a one-year hiatus…Zydeco is back with a vengeance in the form of none other than ROSIE LEDET! (www.rosieledet.net)
Rosie has become the act to watch on the zydeco circuit. Brimming with coy sensuality, Rosie's music is fresh and daring, while still retaining its links to its bayou Creole heritage. Rosie has a rare combination of talent, not only in the zydeco world, but also in any musical genre. She can write top-notch award winning songs. Hang with the best of them on her instrument, and can sing circles around her peers. Rosie is among the few zydeco artists who can still sing and write some of their own material in Creole French. This my friends…is gonna be fun!!! Not only is Rosie going to light up the stage on Saturday evening in Central Park, but… she is also going to headline our annual “PreFest” party… again this year at El Rancho… what a hoot that show was last year! Don’t miss the “Zydeco Sweetheart” Rosie Ledet… get ready to DANCE!
One of my favorite guitar players, hell, one of my favorite guys is Chicago (and Chicago Blues Fest!) favorite DAVE SPECTER. (www.davespecter.com) With a hot new record, a hot club in Chicago and, as always, a fabulous band, his own signature guitar style and…a super singer to bring it all together in Sharon Lewis, this, Dave’s 3rd Trinidaddio appearance is set to be his most kick ass set ever!
Dave's latest CD, Spectified features special guest David Hidalgo from Los Lobos and Brother John Kattke from the bands of Buddy Guy and Otis Rush.
"Specter's ninth album confirms his status as one of the few top-tier guitarists." Downbeat from a 4 Star review.
Specter's guitar playing can be heard on national TV and radio commercials for Kraft Foods and Northwest Airlines. Dave's recently been featured in Vintage Guitar and Downbeat magazines and has been a 5 time Critic's Choice in The Chicago Reader. Don’t miss The Dave Specter Band, featuring Sharon Lewis this year. Together they bring Chicago to Trinidad!!
We have had bands from all over the US play at Trinidaddio…
Harper & Midwest Kind
Part harmonica virtuoso and part rhythmic explorer, Harper is a fiery artist – singer / songwriter who blurs the lines between blues, soul, rock and world music.
Prior to his introduction to American audiences, Harper released six albums to great acclaim in his homeland of Australia. In 1994 he moved to Melbourne, Victoria and released his first album, "Tears of Ice". This was followed by "Yesterday Is Over" in 1996 with his band Blue Devil and "Live At The Soup Kitchen" in 1997 as a soloist. In 2000, he released "Glass on The Stepping Stone" and "Live At St. Andrew’s" in 2002. In 2003 he released "Way Down Deep Inside", for which he received two harmonica awards and Album of the Year honor from US Magazine's Guide to the Best of the Blues Harmonicas & Beyond. Over the years Harper has received multiple Australian Blues Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Acoustic Artist of the Year.
I got to meet and see Harper play after years of hearing about his unique blend of styles, instruments and…virtuoso harp playing thrown in for good measure. What a show!! I booked him for Trinidaddio on the spot…come and see what Australia (and now Detroit!) has brought to the blues world…it is HARPER!
We cannot leave out Mexican Jerry and the ABC back for their 13th Fest, the only band to do that…and you know why! This year Jerry has promised more ABC sparks than ever before (and don’t miss them after Rosie Ledet on Friday nite at the El Rancho either!) so…bring you dancing shoes…Jerry and the boys require them after all!
Of course, there will be many more great acts. Our own Chicago bluesman Ken Saydak (www.kensaydak.com) will perform solo as only he can…what a treat! Ken will also host another post fest “pro-jam”…details at the Fest…don’t miss the late nite fun! Absolutely thrilled to have one of the great people and great voices anywhere,
Denver’s own Erica Brown and her band returning to the Daddio stage. What a great show Erica puts on…you will love her! Another “please bring them back band” is Soul Kitchen featuring vocalist extraordinaire Hilary Smith from Santa Fe. They scorched the stage two years ago and…here they come again! Our show this year will start with two brand new Trinidaddio “soon to be favorites”, Trinidad’s own Sunny Side Up and from Pueblo and their very how “Hideaway Lounge” come the Fat Chance Blues Band…these guys are local sure but…they sure are good too!
Our beloved Jaquie Gipson will take this year off after opening the Fest for our first 12 years. Sure hope to see Jaquie at Trinidaddio again sometime soon!
